Free bump. Had the E39 M5 shift knob/boot in my old Touring. You can replace the odd-shaped E39 plastic bracket to make it fit in other BMWs. (E34 pictured below).

did you cut off the leather under the knob? i'd like to keep this one for my car but was afraid of hacking it up..
No cutting was necessary. I just pried the E39 plastic frame off and glued the E34 frame on, using binder clips to hold it tight while the glue dried. There was a little extra leather that I bunched together at the front of the frame. If I had some leather sewing skills, I would have taken apart the seam, and resewn it to fit exactly.
