    Early E36s came with halogen filament bulbs inside the switch.
    As technology advanced, they started coming with LEDs.
    In other words, the non-illuminated are the ones that have blown miniature filament bulb.
    You can change the bulb if you wish and make them illuminated once again. Bulb available at radioshack or online.
    And for the record, the illuminated ones that i sold had LEDs.
