My guess is the person above is referring to grooves cut into the friction material. In my 30 plus years of installing clutches many friction surfaces look just like the one above in the picture. My two clutch kits for 1986-1988 E30 and E28 m20 ETA equipt cars (one kit new,one used) have no grooves in the friction surface just as in the above picture. The friction disc in the picture looks quite young to me. I would recommend the seller places the clutch disc on the edge of a table and place a stack of quarters on the table next to the edge of the friction material. Maybe even place a stack of dimes on the other side of the disc stacked right next to the edge of the friction sandwich. Then take a close up picture comparing disc thickness to stacks of coins. In addition a seller could take a used friction disc to Autozone or a machine shop and have the disc measured with V. calipers. I would also recommend a picture of the pressure plate showing clean, not burnt pressure plate. From the single picture above I am lead to believe this clutch kit is in fact very young and NOT overpriced.Comment

this guys talking about the groves cut into the clutch to help remove dust. kinda like a slotted brake disk.
there are many different types of clutches.. from ones like this to the slotted ones to ones with pucks on them.
but it looks mediocrely used. you can tell by looking at the rivets and the amount of clutch left... hope this helps

Received clutch today. It is as described. Friction material was ~3.5mm thick on each side. Anyone know how thick a new clutch is?Comment
