Automatic Four Door 1996 328i. Very well maintained since we've had it. All dealer work or work done by my father and me. The car is in good shape outside and great shape inside. Grandma driven by my mother for the time we've had it (her OBC mileage never deviates from 28 mpg with mixed highway and city driving). I've taken pictures of the two problem areas on the outside.
Florida car until we bought it and brought it to Tennessee. We've had it for three years.
Reason for selling: The car is drinking coolant. When started up the car idles rough for about thirty seconds and the vapor expelled is in excess. The vapor is sweet smelling. After this period of rough idling, the car runs wonderfully with full power. My mother took the car to the dealer and after they replaced the fan shroud and coolant expansion tank, they said that they think the car has either a bad head gasket or has a bad head. Before all of this we replaced the water pump. To me it sounds like a bad head. Theeurodepot quoted me one month ago $895 for a used head.
The good: Very clean interior with no rips or tears anywhere, CD changer in the trunk, premium sound system, will include the code reader/light resetter, etc. The body is in good condition with zero rust (except for the small surface rust shown in the one picture below) and the underside is also rust free. No leaks of any fluid. Castrol full synthetic oil used, BMW dealer transmission and rear end fluids, BMW blue coolant. Doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil.
Problems: As stated above, the head gasket or head is gone and should be replaced. This is causing the CEL to come on. When reading it, the code corresponds to the #3 cylinder misfire (makes me think this is where the coolant is leaking in). The 'brake light circuit' check will come on ever so often (the dealer said the brake light switch needs to be replaced -- cheap). The steering wheel has a rubbing sound in it (dealer says the 'slip ring', which is the ring the horn arm rubs on, needs to be replaced).
I've tried to describe it to the best of my ability and will answer any questions as well as I can.
