I had an S54 with that kind of failure. It's not a big deal to fix. However, you need to assume that ALL of the timing chain components need to be replaced - my guides were all damaged and you have to be aware that the reason why the valve cover was cracked is because bits of the VANOS cogs were machine gunned into it. Because of the irritating way in which they ordered parts, my car sat on the lift at a Sterling for over 3 months.
It's a useful core engine if you've got everything, but keep in mind that you'll need $1,500-2,000 in parts to make it usable.
