So I pulled an s52 out of a wrecked 98 m3 auto sedan with 141k miles. Did not hear it running but it looked good. Clean oil, clean coolant. Did a leak down and have two cylinders in which air is bypassing valves. I have no reason to think that they are bent yet. It came from an auto car. I checked the timing and it was perfect. Tensioners are fine. Rings are good as oiling the cylinders made no difference and I am certain the bypass was out of the valves seeing as you could hear the air coming through the manifolds. My best guess is that the valves are really gummy or the lifters are stuck extended. The engine rolls over fine. Everything appears to be in good shape elsewise. Today I am going to take off the manifolds and attempt to clean the valves and retest.
I guess the story is this. For right now if I dont have to mess with the motor i would sell it for 1400 (some possible haggle room for really committed buyers) + you arrange shipping. If I take this head off and refresh it then the price is gonna go up. So if someone is interested let me know. Otherwise the work commences.
