Why can you not test these clusters? Don't have an e30 to put them in?

My car is an older model. the blue backed clusters are different than the early white backed ones. The plugs fit, but the wiring is different I can however test through the ports on the bottom. they test good, but they do not tell me the condition of the temp/fuel/odo. the odo gears look fine nothing is stripped
