I think you're asking if it fits those models, and it does not.

I was wondering (since im not familiar w/ E36 models) what the difference was.

if it was something that can be "shaved down" or cut etc...

I know it doesnt fit per say, but though it can be modified to fit somehow if it was only say the length or the height. But i was browsing through photos, seems like the taillights are really different aside from the possible length issue. thanks Anyway.

I'm not really sure, I've never owned an e36 or I'd probably know more.
