'02 s54 engine and Transmission For Sale, 80K miles

2002 s54 engine and 6 speed trans with 80K miles for sale. The engine is complete -see pictures. All of the bits and pieces are bagged and labeled for reassembly. According to the guy I bought it from, the transmission has a "sticky" second gear. I have no idea what the problem is, or if it's an easy fix or not. The ECU is included. It's was reprogrammed in 2011 by "the guy" in Germany. It was programmed to work with my 89 e30 and comes with full wiring instructions. I paid ~$1250, but I know the current going price for s54/e30 reprogramming is $300 - $400. The reprogram is stock s54, no performance additions, or emissions deletions as I wanted to get it BAR'ed in California. I lost momentum on the project and never installed the engine. I planned to pull the head and get a VAC stage 1 head rebuild, hence the current state of disassembly.

I'm asking $3,750. Pick up only. I'm located near Eureka, CA in Humboldt County. It's 300 miles north of SF and 400 miles south of Portland. If you're interested, PM me for my number.

I also have the entire set of s54 BMW tools for head, cams, shims, etc removal and installation. They were seriously hard to obtain. I'll be listing them separately, but the buyer of the engine gets first dibs since reassembly requires them. I'll also throw in the BMW TIS printouts for assembling the heads.

      Will you sell without transmission?

Sorry, I don't want to split up the engine and trans.

Does this "sticky" second gear affect drivability? Do you know if the lower end bearings been replaced?

My guess is the synchro is toast on second gear. I had an Alfa that ate 2nd gear synchros and it had to double clutched for downshifts into second, but the upshifts were fine. It's like driving a straight gear race transmission.( I think most people single clutch and rev match to do the same thing, but I was taught to double clutch and the habit stuck).

The previous owner said the lower end bearings were replaced. Most early s54s were done under warranty. With that said, I was still planning on replacing them for good measure. At the very least, I'd suggest inspecting them while the engine is out.

BTW, I have a set of ARP head studs and a vanos seal kit that I'll throw in on the deal.

              Bump.
Will consider reasonable offers. Willing to sell engine and trans separately.

Do you have compression numbers before it was disassembled?
Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

No compression numbers. It's an 80K mile engine, should be fine. The cylinder walls could be mic'ed to see if there's any significant wear.
