Up for sale is an original engine/transmission combo just pulled from a 121,232 mile 1988 e30 M3. Engine, transmission, and clutch all performed beautifully the last time I drove the car (last week). Reason for sale is impending swap of a non-S14 powerplant...
I had been using MAXX Alpha-N, and I can verify the ICV is operational. Dry compression was 190-202-190-200. The engine is in all likelyhood due for a valve lash reset. Transmission was quiet, synchros felt to be in great shape (but who would know with my perfect rev-match heel & toe, right? haha..) Happy to answer any other questions you might have. High-res or pics of anything in detail are available upon request.
Option 1:
I am offering the complete engine and transmission swap for $3500 as a set, ideal for a complete drivetrain swap or perhaps for a 2002 M2 project. For this price, I will include all accessories (A/C was inop.), any hose you want, oil cooler, shifter, the entire stock intake system (which I know is not pictured, sorry)...basically anything from the engine compartment that I won't be using....fasteners, clamps, hardware, wiring harness, Motronic, AFM... I won't include the guibo, transmission mounts, or engine mounts, since they all were due for replacement.
Option 2a:
If someone wants just the engine, driven accessories, exhaust header- I will let it go for $2700.
Option 2b:
If the engine is sold first, the transmission and shifter (and clutch+ slave cylinder, if desired) will be available for $400.
All of these prices are without shipping, but I am willing to palletize and drop off at a depot, even this week. I am conveniently located just south of Indianapolis if anyone is ready for a roadtrip and wants to pick it up.
Option 3: If there is somehow no to little interest in the powertrain in this form, I am prepared to have the whole shebang disassembled and parted out for individual sale in three weeks. I would really rather not see this strong runner in pieces... I surveyed the S14.net archives and I think the pricing is reasonable.
History: I am the fourth owner of this car/powertrain. I purchased the car in 2005 from a BMW collector in Illinois that was being forced (by his better half) to trim down his collection. He had purchased it in an estate of the third owner, a women who put a vast majority of the miles on the car. She had quite unfortunately died of metastatic breast cancer in 1997. The original owner was an MD from Indiana, who sold the car in 1992.
I will not claim to have all of the records from this engine, but from the ~6k miles I have driven it, I believe it to be a quite strong engine considering its mileage/vintage, as well as an excellent candidate for a refresh in a few years. Excerpts from the engine/trans-specific service history (I have receipts for all except first two entries):
I have performed two Mobil-1 15W50 oil changes w/ the 928 Filter since my ownership, and also replaced the air and fuel filter upon ownership. Bosch cap and rotor have less than 1k miles. I flushed and replenished the coolant once with the genuine BMW juice.
The previous owner said he had no records of oil changes since his ownership since he had performed them himself. Without prompting him, he added that he only used 15W50 - my guess is as good as yours is here, but I was inclined to believe him given how many bavarian creampuffs he had in his stable.
The previous owner also had clutch and both cylinders replaced, flywheel resurfaced, and new trans fluid at 103k 8-2-99
Oil & Filter & Air Filter 97.9k 6-19-97
Oilpan gasket, filter, oil 97.7k 7-23-96
Oil & Filter 96.7k 9-03-95
Drive belts, coolant related recall 82k 1-21-94
Oil & Filter 63k 12-20-92
Oil & Filter ?k 6-3-92
I know it looks dirty, and has clearly slowly seeped oil for quite some years, but this car has not leaked one drop of fluid on my garage floor since I have owned it.
When I removed the plenum, I noticed that two of the studs coming out of the TB's were broken near the nut, and wil be simple to extract. These studs should be easily available from the dealer. Such a cause for an air leak after the AFM explains why the engine really woke up with the Alpha-N!...
cheers,
