BMW m52 2.8 RARE aluminum block AND E36 M3 3.0 crank - $900

I have a complete BMW M52 2.8 aluminum block. The block is complete with the pistons, rods, and crank. The 2.8 aluminum block m52 engine was found only in the 1997-1998 Z3 2.8. The 2.8 aluminum block M52 engine weighs 14 pounds less then the famous s14 e30 M3 engine which makes this block desirable to racers looking to build up a powerful inline 6 engine that will weigh less then a 4 cylinder engine.

I also have a 3.0 crank from a 1995 BMW M3.

When you throw a 3.0 crank into the 2.8 block, you essentially get a high compression 2.9 engine. By combining the 2.8 block and 3.0 crank you can achieve performance similar to the E36 M3 3.0 and 3.2 engines yet maintain a light front end due to the engines lightweight.

Aside from that block being aluminum are there any other differences on it compared to the run of the mill m50/m52 block found in the e34/e36s ?

Does the regular M50/S50 head still bolt on ?

Not to piss on your thread but you sure about this? I thought the aluminum long block weighed as much as an M20, which is 30lbs more than the S14.

True, but that's an entirely different motor that is not compatible with M50/M52 cylinder heads, so it doesn't really apply. The only M50/2/S52 based motor that had an aluminum block came in the Z3's as Eric mentioned.

If I weren't AWD I'd jump all over this. Last time I called a salvage yard for just a bare aluminum block it was $900.

I'm hoping to close a sale for a 3.2 block this week.

I may very well sell the block and crank separately if I get good offers for both.

I may be able to haul this over to Cali for Bimmerfest, but I would charge a small handling fee and would want a 15% deposit up front.

I'll update this thread with pics when I hear back from the 3.2 engine seller.


As for the engine specs, other posters have cleared up the m52 vs m54 confusion. The weights on bimmerforums may or may not be accurate. Some people say this sucker weighs a bit less then the s14. The stats on BFC say otherwise. Either way, this is a desirable block because it is lightweight. And for this price...You can't lose!
