Tom, I don't know a whole hell of a lot about this particular motor - can you shed some light on it for me? I was under the impression some of the alum motors were problematic from the sulfur if they were done in the Nikasil coating. Did this particular model have that problem? This seems somewhat interesting to me if the deal goes through this weekend on another car I am looking at.

this block is a us 97-98 z3 block, it does NOT have the nikasil coating(those were only on euro aluminum m52's).
this motor is identical to the m52 found in 96-99 US 328's(e36) except the block in aluminum , not iron.

Do you know what the weight is on one of these in full drag? I have seen references to around 260 lbs in one place but don't know is that number is right. Wheels are turning about a replacement for the M42 down the road so I am trying to get a comparison on how much it would add to the front of the car. Of course motor alone doesn't take into account radiator and fluid, exhaust, along with a number of other things. I still don't think it would be near what the M20/50/52 would be though.

when i swapped my auto m20 325 to a 5 speed S50 I lost 20 pounds. This block is around 120-130 pounds as seen in the pics, probally 50-75 lighter than the a iron block m50/52,s50/52

From pulling hair? Hope it wasn't that bad an experience... ;) I want this, but probably shouldn't I need to find out what this car it looks like I am picking up this weekend is going to need before I do anything else. Never know how much $$$ I am going to need to put into it.
