Suspension is the same on all non-M e30s. The difference lies in the spring rates and swaybar size.

Actually, I believe the 1984 and 1985 had smaller strut tubes in the front, but I think the rears are the same as other e30's

Yeah, i was going to mention that, but just neglected to since it's springs that are the issue here. The 84 and 85 318s have smaller front struts (45mm as opposed to 51mm), and a few 325s did during those years too.
