Yep - that is exactly what it is for. The stock sensor built with a "molded plastic" that seeps water into it and eventually rots from the inside out. And cost $80. Mine are sealed in marine grade epoxy, and protected in a ABS case. The end is double sealed with silicone to allow for expansion and contraction.

By the way, I just had the temp sensor tested on an e28 and it works perfectly. Same part on all e28/e24/e32.
