loop lines out of you PS rack and BAM you got yourself a manual steering rack.

Don't see what the big deal is, but i do like the idea of original parts.

I'm back home again now. I see a little info getting posted that isn't really that great of advise maybe. Why would you want to run a P/S rack without the pump? Sure you can loop a hose back to the pump and fill it with fluid, but that’s not a very elegant way of doing things. I’ve never taken any of these racks apart, but there must be something different about the design of the manual rack as the car is easier to steer with it than one that has had the P/S pump taken off. I’ve have driven cars both ways and know for certain that the manual rack is easier to turn. It also has much better feedback than a power rack, either with the pump working or not. The fluid in the power rack must kind of work as a cushion and it isolates thing somewhat. Plus, if you want manual steering why mess with something that can leak fluid when the manual rack uses heavy grease for lube? On the other hand I know that most modern race cars have power racks, but that’s not what we are talking about here.

Also, I have received a couple of e-mails and I see some posts here talking about the turns being this or that “lock to lock.” I don’t know what your car might have in it for a rack, but the manual racks I have are 4.1 to 1 ratio. Both of the racks are on a work bench and I just tested them. I measured a power rack that is in one of my cars and it appears to be 4 to 1 ratio. This verifies what I thought I knew and said the other day. Because I’ve been an E30 enthusiast now for about 12 years some of the old info I picked I may have forgotten or I might not be sure of. Personally I think both racks have 100% the same ratio. I think that the manual rack just turns a hair more probably because it has different seals inside of it or something like that.

Hey, do you still have the rack? Also, what is the part number? I'd like to see if there is anything else I need to install this in my 325i. Thanks
