Are you sure the play isn't coming from the interior of the car?

I had the same situation, after searching the forum I learned that on the airbag cars the column is designed a little different and the play is a common problem as our cars get older. However, it is a simple fix.....If you climb under the dash you will see a large nut on the column (grab a big wrench/pump pliers, or pipe wrench) and tighten it. It takes a bit of effort to get the nut to move, but made a night and day difference on my car.

Just my 2 cents....and its free to check out.

Just to make sure we are talking about the same nut, it is in the last pic on this thread:

I had to loosen mine first, throw some antisieze on the threads and then really crank on it....at least I feel connected to the road now.

I have a complete column out of an 88' (non-airbag car)

In about a month I should have the piece you need (from an airbag car) if you haven't found one by then

ya thats def the one that i originally tightened. it def needed to be tightened and i feel like it did make a difference. it used to do it during hard braking and if i just pushed the steering wheel up really hard. now i only notice it on my street. my street is a dead end street and it is destroyed from the plows. i prob never would have noticed it if i didn't live here. if you think about it let me know when u got the part. thanks
