      ^ this.

Might not be a thin-walled socket, but a few minutes with an angle grinder on a cheap socket will make it work just fine.

Also might check Northern Tool, etc for the socket- they usually have cheap ones that work fine for this.

if you're using this for the rear wheel bearings, make sure you get a 12 point.

I also use a gearwrench. If that doesn't work/you can't find one, you can use a grinder to grind down the outside edge.

because the rear axle nuts are 12 point nuts.

maybe that was E36 specific. weird though, because my mechanic had e30 stuff and it fit

I also noticed there are no metal retainers on the nuts.

I also checked realoem.com and it shows the same nut with a collar bracket.

This is not rocket science, really. It doesn't have to be purchased from Advance Auto- that's why I mentioned Northern Tool as another possibility.

Do you have Discount AutoParts? AutoZone?? OReilly's?? Napa? CarQuest??? Harbor Freight?? Sears???? Amazon.com?? (Hell, you could have ordered one online and had it delivered by now)... ;)

Most of these places should have what you need.

No, e30 rear hub nuts are 6 point, E36's are 12 point.

But 12 point sockets generally have a little bit thinner wall than 6 point, but they also tend to crack/split a little easier if you use them on an impact wrench or with a big ass breaker bar.
