I'm not 100% sure yet, but thought I'd see what's out here locally.
I was planning to go 24V this summer, but then all this shit came up, and I need a reliable commuter, and something to take down to Socal with me in the fall.
If you're going to change your motor for one with lower miles because of your cam gears I'm going to have to urge you to reconsider. That's just replacing old used parts with old used parts. For the amount you'll spend on an M42 and install you could just spend on new cam gears and put them in yourself and have brand new timing components versus old worn out stuff that will eventually need to be replaced.
If you want to do a swap I'm sure we can arrange something at my shop for you.

Whoa, you have a shop?
I really would like to stick with my 24V Swap plan, but the University of California is about to rape my bank this fall, and I only have around a grand to work with.
Edited the thread title for a reason.
After a lot of "consultation", the 24V Swap is starting to look like the more sensible option.
Our family's old german mechanic even agrees that an M50 is likely to be in better shape than a used M42 because of engine stress, that I would find from all the years of use on the 1.8L. Time to get looking.
