No need for a spring compressor, just use a deep socket and a heavy mallet. place the ratchet side box shaped hole on the valve retainer and give it a decent blow. It might take a couple of blows but the valve keys will just pop out. It also helps if you stuff a piece of napkin into the socket so the keys dont come flying out through the hole.

Might work on a old V8. I tried this unsuccessfully on an m20 head. A spring compressor is like $25 and takes all of 30 minutes for the whole head.

And the thing about these 25 dollar spring compressors is that the legs that clamp to the bottom of the springs will hit the head casting and head bolt holes. There isnt much room between the two so its going to take some finesse.
