I have one from a '91 318is. Not really sure what the difference between them is. It has the 7k rpm. It has new solder and new gears and the SI board checks ok.

What exactly is the coding plug issue? A 4-banger coding plug will read wrong on a 6-cylinder.

It's a different style. It is located in the back unlike the late models. I've tried a few clusters and even late model 7k tachs. A similar early model tach with my plug is the only thing that will work based on what I've read on the internets.
