I have one from my '89 track car. According to RealOEM and BMWFans they're the same early or late. We go to Powhatan often (daughter and her family live there) so we could probably arrange a meet.

early model has a cut out for the crank and late has cut outs for switch. not sure it would work.

I think you're confusing manual vs electric. Manual was standard but you could get electric as an option for both early and late models. Mine is manual, like yours.

late model cars also had crank sunroofs. My 1991 318is has a crank sunroof and uses that same head board.
I also believe I have one if you don't work a deal out with vpilarrt, but shipping might be annoying, so I'd try and meet with him first

Hmm, didn't know that. All three of the late models ive had have been electric so i figured they all were.

Good luck finding a pristine one, all of the dozens that I've seen did exhibit separation from the cardboard base in the re-entrant corners.
