I have a med case... any reason for a small vs med?

Its for my dad's 318is, rather go with the lighter diff. It also seems that they might be a bit cheaper as they aren't quite as desirable.

came from running/driving car,
no noise,
had the ususual seepage from the shaft seals.
I'd preventively put in new shaft seals.
