My girlfriend was driving my 91 E30 318i last Sat night and it died on her. She had it towed to her place and then I told her to tow it to German Auto Sport in Berkeley on Mon. Chris, the owner of told me that my engine has no compression in the engine, pistons's move but the valve train doesn't. I'm guessing the timing chain or cam sprocket broke. Unbelievable to say the least considering the mileage on the car (129K). It's common for M20 timing belts to break due to maintenance neglect by owners but this is the first time I've heard of a M42 timing chain breaking. WTF,O! I've been driving BMW's for over 25 years and this is the first time I've had an internal engine failure.
Who's got a M42 engine for sale? If anyone in the SF Bay area has one, then send me a PM? This car is too nice to part out.
Sucks to be me since I just parted out my 91 318i parts car last year and it had a perfect M42 with only 94K on it. That car cost me only $450 bucks but I got my money's worth out of it. Too bad I didn't keep the motor.
