Front or rear sunshine?!

Does anyone know why so few E30 cars have the Ate brakes? I wanted to find a set of fronts last week and looked at maybe 3 dozen wrecking yard cars. All had the Girlings if they had brakes left on them. I'm guessing that BMW had to pay more for the Ate calipers than the Girlings so they didn't buy as many. Just a guess.
