WTB: Stock chip for 87 153 ECU

Car won't pass smog, even with new cat and oxygen sensor. I need to replace the Turner chip with the stock one. I sold my stock one to another member because I passed smog last time around. By reading other threads, it seems CA has passed more stringent regs since I last tested.

PS: Does anyone know if you can swap a 173 ECU from later models? Seems to be alot of them for sale out there.

You should swap in the 173 or even a newer one than that as they are a better design than the 153. The newer ones interchange with the 153. How about one for $35 shipped?

          I've got a 153 box from a 1991 ix. ,works fine.

I'm not sure how a 173 is newer or better, both were used through 1991.

          I PM'd you

I don't think that your 153 ECU is the original one the car came with. I've never seen one installed by the factory in a car newer than 1988. Those old 153 ECUs are Motronic 1.1 units. Most 1991 cars came with the 380 units and I've seen the 524 and 525 ones installed also.

That's a good point, and I think you are right. But, isn't the only real difference from 1.1 to 1.3 the data saving end of things? I do know 173 and 153 interchange, I use a number of boxes to compare chips, and the 153 works just fine in my 1989i. I've seen 153s in several late cars now, the one I got this from, and another 91ix. Someone out there knows interchangeability!
