    WTB: 325i speedometer ~180k

Sorry for anyone that I've asked to buy things from and then didn't need them...But I really do need this, there's no way around it. I need a known working speedometer for a 325i, late model if it makes a difference. Preferably with 180-185k, as no one will tell me how to roll forward an odometer so I just need one that is the same mileage.

I replaced it once already, with one that doesn't work...So I want to know that it for sure works before I buy another. I tested one that is working though so I know it's the problem.

EDIT: Possibly one with lower mileage would work if I can't find one close enough

Jordan rolled one forward. George Graves took one apart to change the mileage, took a fiar bit of work as I remember it. You can try a small screwdriver to pry the numbers to where you want them, I was messing around with one once and it looked like it would work, but it also felt like I would break whatever was holding it together, maybe if I took out the gears it would have worked.

I suppose I do have two broken ones I could mess with. It's just annoying that people won't help me because they think I'm gonna roll the mileage back:roll: If I were trying to make the miles seem lower, there's plenty of low 100k speedometers out there, and I would just buy one of those. I don't think you can pry them into place, there's a mechanism on the side that looks like you could do something from there, but I don't want to break it.

You can always pay a speedo shop to turn it. I didn't really look at the one I had that well. There probably is though, GG was talking about unsoldering stuff.

FWIW, I'd try to find a Motometer unit, as they are easier than the VDO to roll. And, yes, late model does make a difference, the one you are looking for is a slightly smaller unit than the early model unit, ask me how I know.

I removed the motor to get access to the set of small gears - actually the axle for the gears. I partially removed one end to free them up and flipped all the digits.

Hey guys, it's probably not a good idea to be talking about changing the mileage on an odometer on a public forum like this one. Rolling one forward or backward might still cause you a problem way, way on down the road if you are discussing it here. These threads live forever on the net.

That being said there probably hasn't been an easier one to move up or back than the odometer in the BMW E30...... Hello. If it's your car and you know the true mileage, then do what you need to do. Take it out of the cluster and take a look at the back of it. Take a close look. It isn't going to take a rocket scientist to see what you need to do.

I have 2 325i speedos with low mileage. $125 each, shipping is $10 to Seatown. BTW, 51k and 58k.

I have other clusters also in the 75k range.

I have one with I believe 165k miles on it. I'm not 100% sure it works but if you still need one I will put it in my car and test it first.

Not really IMHO, it's only a legal issue if you try and defraud someone with it.

+1. You're not going to get in trouble for messing with your own odometer.

In Oregon you don't even have to disclose mileage on a car over 10(?) years old.
