There are 3 types of E36 steering racks:

1. '95 M3
2. 1.9L Z3
3. ALL the rest (From a lowly '92 318i to an '03 M Roadster)

A lot of people don't seem to know this, so I hope you didn't pay more than about $100 for that rack (unless it is either #1 or #2 on that list).

yeah, I found that out through my searches. thanks. I got a '97 e36 rack with the akg knuckle and rack spacers for $140 shipped. not too bad.
