It looks like the camera body around the lens has changed with the newer versions. Do you happen to know if the newer units are compatible with older accessories, like the suction mount for example?

They ARE compatible with the Older Mounts, The only items that aren't compatible from older models are as follow: The Battery Backpacks and the LCD Screen, These newer models would require the newer versions.

What's the maximum recording time with one of these units?

It depends on the memory card you put in it. The Silver Edition uses MicroSD Class 4 or higher and supports up to 64GB, The Black Edition uses MicroSD Class 10 or higher and also supports up to 64GB.

Recording time will also differ depending on what quality you decide to record at. So i wouldn't be able to give you a figure.
