I wouldnt go right into a Chem enviroment with that filter, but maybe like paint fumes, something simple.

if you can tap the filter on your had and you have black charcoal hit your hand its no good.

this one doesnt do it, but its not the new style like it should be.

when i was in the navy, i found a box of these in an old conex bin i was emptying out and was told to trash 'em. ended up selling 11 of them for $150 each and keeping the rest for the family. 400 is outrageous for one. just befriend somebody in the military and ask them to steal you one.
