E30CanadaVert, there's definitely enough gap to access the controls, but it is a compromise.
The temperature and fan speed are unobstructed, depending on the size of your phone the vent sliders are partially blocked.

I bought and installed the unit in my E30 cabriolet. Fits perfect, nice secure clamp for the phone and the twin USB ports are unobtrusive and convenient to power my phone.

I have not personally tried it with the garagistic cup holder, although I believe one of my customers has before.
You might need slightly longer screws mounting screws.

Just wanted to update and let everyone know I've been working hard and managed to make great improvements on the texture of the phone mounts/cup holders!

Some of us have an additional gauge cluster pod https://www.ebay.com/itm/254738293855 . Could you design a different phone holder so that the phone faces the drive but does not obstruct the gauges? I have a phone one of your phone mounts already, can I remove one and replace it?
