You will end up having 2 sensors. The stock m50 one and the m20 one.

    The m20 one is brown.

Yeah, the m20 sensor plugs right into the e36 harness.

I put my brown sensor first (toward the front of the block) and the e36 sensor just to the right of it, but in reality it doesn't matter which goes where, all they are is coolant temp sensors sensing coolant from the same place.

The sensor towards the front of the cylinder head on your car should be retained. The one to the right of it (between the first sensor and the throttle body heater line) should be replaced with the M20 single-pole brown sensor. That would be the proper way to do it because that is how the harness hooks up in the M50.

I'm trying to figure this one out also... so I take my E30 sensor and put it into number 8:

? also is simply a deal where I have to replace the existing sensor there with my E30 one and plug the same wire back in and all should work fine?

No....ideally in the location of #6 (middle) because that is the way the harness is as rThor432 said....
