    the infamous fuse #10

So Im having a little electrical trouble. I had been having some trouble with an e34 harness do to a short and while driving one day, all the guages died and i lost my starter. Considering all the issues i had had with the e34 harness i opted just to get another harness, this time from a auto e36. all is fine on the install but fuse 10 blows every time power is applied by turning the key to number 2(thus energizing the top post on the junction box) thus causing the gauges and starter to die. I am running the treehouse adapter and due to other issues sent it back to make sure that there were no issues with it and it was sent back checking out A OK. I have a fairly weak knowledge on electronics diagnosis but. I cannot seem to find the correct diagram in the bentley the shows what this could be shorting to. Like i said i dont have much knowledge in terms of electronics so please please help a fellow swapper out!

for the 87, power should come from the ign switch (via grn wire) to fuse 10 only in the "run and start" position. from there, fuse 10 sends power (via grn/wht wire) to:
        reverse light switch.
cluster (3 plugs)/ check engine light.
        active check control.
        seat belt warning.
        accessory plug. (in glove box.)
        k7 unloader relay.

first, i would unplug the k7 relay and try again. you will loose your blower and p.windows, but this will help eliminate that part of the system. Im guessing this is the problem. Some 87 e30's use the k7 relay differently than the 88+ cars.

        if that is not it,
i would check that the reverse light wiring. see if there is a short.
unplug cluster (all 3 plugs). see if there is still a short.

        cheers, jason

i will give that a try, but im actually suspecting that it is the reverse light switch because i just simply have the wires tucked into up under the shift boot so they could be grounding out

so it was the reverse lights, one of the wires was shorting out inside the center console. what a lame reason to have your car not start....
