any responses to the cam question? I know you can run 2 intake cams.. or an s50 intake and the m50 intake as the exit - any idea how these combos might perform with a turboed motor?

      current plans:
      hone the m50 block
      no head work
      Weisco forged pistons
cryo treat the rods and possibly the valves, and the piston rings
      stock crank
-still haven't figured out which cams.. :(
      getrag 240 trans
new clutch - if I can afford it, get rid of the dual mass for a single mass
      3.15, 3.23, or 3.25 LSD
      frankensteined drive shaft
      ebay header (cut and welded)
      holset hx35 turbo
MS ecu, hopefully I can find one used for a decent price

      z3 steering rack
ebay brake kit, probably going to cryo treat the rotors (best bang for the buck college budget)
      I.E. sway bars
      I.E. Strut tower bar

      dye the interior black
      new front seats

thoughts? feelings? objections? flame suit is on.. I AM new to this, I'm prepared ;)

getrag 240 uses the M42 crossmember and tranny mounts but you need a manual E36 drive shaft (I have one I can sell to you) but you need a different clutch/flywheel setup IIRC. The M42 clutch won't work. Whichever flywheel/clutch setup you get, you need the starter to go with it. Also you need the euro 323 throw out bearing. Other than that, looks good so far.

Id do some kind of head work. $75 to plane it and I can show you how to lap valves at home.

        Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

lapping valves is a cheap way to get much better compression. I'd also replace the seals. While you have your head planned, you could see if the shop will check guide tolerances.

my first trip ever to a junkyard today earned me a volvo lip and a new e-brake (my button was missing)

I stopped by my shop on the way home and spoke to my friend who came across a turbo off of a 2.5 L imprezza, looks like i'll be using this turbo instead - smaller, faster spool, I don't need a turbo capable of 600+ hp either haha

so I think I'm going to look for an s50 intake cam if I can find one and run the m50 intake cam in the exit cam position - how many of you are using this setup/what kind of results have you gotten?

you can run s50 cams in a nv motor? i thought the s50 intake cam had the vanos thing on it.

yea I don't think you can run an S50 intake cam. I thought it was an S50 exhaust cam. I know JonK ran 2 NV intake cams and had the intake one reground or somethign.

yay! I wasn't sure at all, took a shot in the dark to try and evoke some answers because I couldn't find what I was looking for. Now I have a direction to look in haha

aight - new plan. Save money, build it right the first time, not cutting any corners. For NOW it will be built to take boost and a beating, but will remain N/A until I can afford to do it right.

                            today - cleaning everything up
tomorrow/Wednesday - bring in the block and head to the machine shop for work
Wednesday/Thursday - send out valves, rods, rings and a few other parts to get cryo-treated

weekend June 30th - m50 starts to go together

                            Still need:
                            -Head gasket
                            -a BUNCH of other gaskets/seals
-probably a new valve cover... realized yesterday that when we loaded the crank into my trunk 2 weekends ago we accidentally cracked the valve cover...fml
                            -brake booster
                            -e34 throttle cable
                            -motor mounts
                            -diff & appropriate DS.
-a small laundry list of other parts.

Now - for the exciting news for everyone else planning this swap. My friend who's doing all of the welding for me is trying to start a small fab business on the side. He's going to try his hand at making me a bottom mount manifold to use later on (think thats the route I'm goin at this point), I told him that there is quite a large demand on here for manifolds especially. I'll be the guinea pig and see how well all this comes out, BUT if it comes out as well as I am hoping - he will be fabricating/selling manifolds and other custom parts in the future for those of you who want it. Other than the PIA to use ebay manifold and the 666 one, I'm not aware of any quality middle-price range parts. Depending on how much work is required, he was thinking of selling the manifolds for around 200 shipped. After mine is done he could probably draw up plans for a top mount for those who are interested. :)

Bottom mounts FTL. You won't be able to do it without an oil pump system and I doubt you will fit it in an E30. The frame and motor mounts get in the way too heavily. I tried it. If you have no AC, you might be able to place it there but that fucks with placement of so many things.

go top mount. Do it better than me so you can close the hood. Its been done.
