    Engine Oil Question

I'm looking into buying synthetic oil in bulk for both of my cars. I have an M50 E30 and a 99 Jetta Tdi. According to the owner's manual the Tdi can run 5w30 or 5w40 no problem. I checked the E36 Bentley and in warmer weather it says to run 15w40 while in colder weather it says to use 5w30. The API rating required is only SH or SJ. My supplier used to be able to get 5w40 Lubromoly Synthoil for $160/case (4 5L jugs). But now the price is $192/case. He said he can get this new oil called Blu Synthetic in a 20L pail for $160. My only concern is it's 5w30. But it is rated BMW LL04. Both oils are fine for the Tdi. Would running the 5w30 in my M50 have any negative impacts?

Here are the oil ratings I googled for those who care:

Lubro Moly Synthoil High Tech 5w40.
    Meets API SM / CF; ACEA A3-98/B3-98 Issue2/B4-98; BMW Longlife-98, MB 229.1, MB 229.3, VW 502.00, 505.00.

The company is called Blu Synthetic and they are from Calgary, Alberta(Canada). The oil is called 5w-30 Technician Series LS-FS. Its specifications are:
    API: SL/CF
    ACEA: A3/B4-04
    ACEA:C3-04
    BMW:LL04
    FORD:WSS-M2C917-A
    Mercedes Benz:229.51
    VW/Audi: 502.00, 505.00, 505.01

At the moment there's fresh Lubro Moly Synthoil High Tech 5w40 in the M50. I just plan on doing an oil change on the Tdi soon so I want to take the E30 into consideration when I buy my oil.

Mine likes the Mobil 1 15w50. mmmmmmm...

I also use the Shell Rotella (off-and-on) in the fall and mix-blend 5w30 and 15w50 for the winter. Works great for my climate.

Mobil 1 15w50 is what I've found is most commonly run. It's pretty affordable too so that appears to be what I'll be putting in. I'll just drain the 5w40 that's in there now and dump it in my diesel later. Thanks guys.

The staff at Blu Canada Limited has read your comments and concerns regarding engine lubricant selection for your BMW and Jetta. Based on the model year of both vehicles Blu would recommend you use our 5W-50 Technician Series FS. This engine lubricants was designed for both older vehicles and performance applications.

In older vehicles, high mileage concerns include issues like: wear, hotter operating temperatures, and possible oil consumption. By using our 5W-50, you will still retain cold crank performance but receive an additional level of protection due to its' thicker viscosity at temperature (50).

We suggest you ask your service technician to source our 5W-50 for your vehicles.

We hope that helps you out.
