    24V oil temps

For those of you with oil temp gauges, what temps are you seeing in:
    - hot stop-start traffic jams
    - On track
    - Highway cruising

    Thanks

On Track, I was seeing about 200*F.
This is with the Euro s50b32 plumbed up to an e28 m5 oil cooler.

Wow only 200 deg F? That works out to about 93 deg C which is what my temps arewhen the engine is warmed up in normal street driving. Of course my M50 has no oil cooler. I saw just over 120 deg C after 4-5 laps on the track.

In heavy traffic on a hot day (ambient 35-40 deg C) it creeps up to nearly 100 deg C. Just wondering if this is normal for an M50.

Should be around 190 on the track. Although a little warmer means thinner oil so less power loss. But that would be so small it would only be noticeable on a dyno.

Now that I think about it, my oil temps may have been at 210 at the last track day. My oil system is definitely not stock though. I have approximately a 9.5L oil capacity.

It really depends on the oil you run. Dino will be toast at 260f, but synthetic will be OK.

200-240 is about right for running hard with synthetic.

i remember from one of my college automotive engineering classes my professor saying that as a rule of thumb, oil temp will in a healthy engine will normally be 40 degrees warmer than the water temp. by that standard, 80C seems a little bit low.

So do you think its worth the effort for me to put in an oil cooler system for a car that is 99% street driven if I am seeing 100 deg C (210 deg F) on a hot day in heavy traffic? Would an oil cooler even make a noticeable difference to oil temps in traffic?

that sounds to me like a good operating temperature for engine oil to me. it needs to get to a certain temperature so moisture and gasoline vapors will evaporate from the crank case. what would be your purpose for getting the temperature lower than that?

to avoid any chance of pinking and also the engine seems to feel more lethargic when temps are high.

I wonder why the M20 had an oil cooler and the M50 doesn't?

                          M52B28 alloy block
                          7L oil capacity
                          M20 oil cooler

3-4 minute track sprint session at ambient temp ~15oC, oil temp tended to be about 95oC.

Answer: More oil capacity in the M50, hence lower temps.
