Load Leveler Question

My load leveler is about 15" long and the chains put some pressure against the valve cover. I'm worried that once I have a transmission attached and angle the whole setup for dropping into the engine bay, the force could crack my cover or create a worse problem.

Anyone have a source for a nice long load leveler? Or am I worrying about nothing?

Harbor Freight makes an inexpensive and long load leveler for around $20.

In the absence of that, you can pad the valve cover with some towels to spread out the load where the chains cross it. I've done this a few times and it has worked out. Remove the plastic coil cover, of course.

Use the lifting point bolted to the engine block by threading in a long bolt through the intake manifold.

first time i put my m50 in i used a load leveler and it was such a pain in the ass, even with two people. Second time i had no help so i used the metal loop bolted to the front of the head, took me 45min with tranny to lower it in and bolted up in place

what are you hooking it to?

i've always used a load leveler, hooked to that metal loop up front by the timing cover (that always bends) and the spot just above the starter. Never had any problems.

edit: here I am at 18 doing it with no leveler

are you talking to me? i'm hooking it to that loop that you're talking about, mine is still straight, so much easier than a load leveler. I must admit you do have to raise the hoist a bit higher than with a load leveler.

edit: just like that pic^^ but on an m50, maybe the m50s are stronger?:)

In all honesty that is not the safest way you should be carrying a motor. Applying the weight of the motor using just one brace that is held by two small screws is no where reliable. Yes people might be doing it all the time but it just doesn't add up. Please be safe than sorry.

The one from harbor freight works fine. Its a little rough with a fully loaded S50 w/ a 6 Speed. But it still worked.
