how to remove intank fuel pump

Is there a trick? I removed the two hoses, disconnected both plugs, and twisted the whole assembly... It's all loose and I can lift it for about an inch but won't come out... it seems whatever is inside the tank is too big to come out of that hole.. Do I have to rotate it a certain way for it to come out?

I've swapped out e36 fuel pumps with no problems..

I can't remember if I had to remove the lever sender first or not...but then again I had an early 325i setup.

remove the level sender

as dominic mentioned, there are 4 nuts on the top of the unit that need to be removed. the level sensor will slide straight out of that hole. then the rest will come out of the tank.
