I have a spare motor and want to build it to be hearty. I thought about new valve guides but don't you have to get new valves too? that easily becoems >$200 in just parts... What else should I do or is there a cheaper solution for guides?

Now, take this with a grain of salt, as I am not a machinist, but I don't think you will need new valves.
Usually a machine shop "reconditions" the valves, meaning they are cleaned thoroughly, and ground in certain areas. Prior to reconditioning, they will measure the stems to see if the stem to guide clearance will be within spec.

You need to really have the valves checked before saying you need them or not.
When I had an m10 head redone the head guy(all he does) said normally the exhaust valves need to be replaced because the heat of the exhaust burn the oil off the bottom part of the valve stem. Thus giving them more wear. I had to only replace the exhaust valves.www.classicdaily.net
