S52 E30. First start, scary noise. Help please.

I finally got the motor running thanks almost 100 % to r3v. anyways before I was even able to get spark i cranked it and heard this loud screeching noise almost like a belt. This car has no belts on it right now. I took out the plugs so it can crank faster and build oil pressure and that didnt help.

The oil light is on when you turn the the key on and then it turns off when you crank it which is what is supposed to happen. So finally i get it running and the noise is still there and its loud.

The only thing i know i should not have done is basically force the trans on because i was by myself at the time and i was tired of trying to realign the clutch, so i got it as centered as i thought it could be and bolted the trans on.

I can't really tell where the noise is coming from, it kinda resonates throughout the motor. My plan is to get the slave to work and see if pressing the clutch changed the noise, but until then i will ask if any of you guys know, have had similar problems, or can tell me what to look for. I just hope it isn't the vanos or some other oiling problem.

Sorry for writing a novel but i hope this video helps.

It sounds like your flywheel is touching somewhere.

^What he said. Running an m20 flywheel with out turning the back or grinding the pan would cause this sound...

I'm going to say you have a ZF transmission with that s52. If that's the case and you are running the dual mass flywheel, I could almost bet my money that you put the clutch disk facing the wrong way (You have the protruding side of the clutch disk facing towards the differential when it should be facing the engine and as a result its rubbing against the spline guide on the transmission). Its a common mistake with dual mass flywheels.

Please tell me I'm right? lol

Aw I must of misread that. I thought you meant you just took them off after you started the engine. Try removing the transmission and see if you put the pressure plate in the wrong way.

^ Clutch disc not PP. ;)

But yeah my guess would have been flywheel related.

ya sorry it is a ZF with dual mass flywheel. I am really hoping its coming from the tranny like most of you are suggesting. I cant really remember what way i put the clutch disc on.

i'm going to pull the trans and see what i find out. ill let you guys know. :)

Now that you say its a ZF tranny, I know I'm right. =)

It's the opposite for M20 flywheels though, correct? I'm using the flywheel off my '88 325i, it had been so long since I took it apart, the guy who built it said the flat side goes to the flywheel.

Please tell me I'm not yanking my trans back out to fix that am I?

Lol 5:30 in the morning half asleep. You might beable to look inside through the little hole in the bottom to see what is hitting before you remove the tranny.
