    new s50 in town

Started prepping my s50 for my swap.Started with the oil pan and new valve cover gasket. I guess i should check the retainers since it has a 09/95 build date. Is this a big job?

It's hard to "check" the retainers, as you'd have to remove the cams and cam trays to access the retainers and spring top plates (the part that fails).

The job is not particularly difficult, but it is one of those things you don't want to mess up. You will need an M50 timing tool kit (cam blocks, vanos turning tool, dummy chain tensioner) and a valve spring compressor.

It should take around 4 hours taking your time. Make sure you put some clean paper towels over the oil passages in the head, because the valve retainers are a split collet design, and are small enough to fall down the oil passages very easily.
