    Quick E36 harness Q's

Hi all, quick question (or not so quick) that I haven't found any answers to in my searches.

    S52 obd1 swap into a 1989 325iX

I have a silver label DME
and an automatic harness OBD1 (which I thought was from a 1995 M3 auto) - bought it off of bimmerforums from a guy who parts mostly M3's...

so i have been using the wedophones wiring diagrams to label each of the connectors and many of the wire colors under the rubber boots dont match the options in the wiring diagrams. SO i checked the continuity of the wires from the DME end to the plug end.

Do ALL computers have the same pin-outs? (other that EWS) ???

If you dont KNOW what the OBD1 E36 engine harness is from (year and model)... then obviously colors COULD be off.... and checking the X20 callouts in the diagrams may result in the wrong pin # and wrong wire color... (It does have 2 O2 sensor plugs so it is obviously OBD1 - continuity to the correct pins for the computer exists...)

I do have an extra 5 series harness... 94 I think... pretty sure its at least the vanos version.... it only has one clipped wire.... but since i dont know the year on that one i am in the same boat... Damn shoulda realized this before!!!

    Any advice?? and thanks guys.

I'll add another question while i am at it...

in the wedophones 1995 electrical troubleshooting wiring harness diagram section 1210.14

there are 3 knock sensors shown....

AND pins 85 86 and 84 (top right corner of the above mentioned diagram which go to the VANOS) do NOT have any mating side connectors on the DME i have....

I'm sure you guys who have made your own harness adaptors or put C101 engine side plugs onto E36 harnesses have seen this come up... Does this make sense???

thanks again - I've been a lurker on here until I bought my engine this spring... I'm usually over at E30tech (http://e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78938).

      Response to my own question...

So, I figured this situation out after a little while... and may as well answer the Questions I asked.:)

When using the ETM's for your specific application... MAKE sure you realize that the Engine Control System (DME M3.3.1 6-Cylinder M50) is the correct heading to use on Vanos M50 and S50 engines and wiring...

The S50B30 refers to the euro engine with DME M3.3 (titles are confusing since we are talking about M3, 3 liter engines...) (not the S50B30US)... I figured this out after referencing the E36 Bentley section 130-2 Table a. (Engine management System Variants). And it very neatly shows the Bosh System titles.

Table J in the Bentley or 1210-13 of the 1995 ETM will give you the pin locations to check the resistance/continuity and locate each plug in the harness (except for the ones which don't report to the DME of course)

So, that is all - hopefully this thread will at least come up in searches for people if the information wasn't already explained.

NOW... to figure out why my 1989 ix C101 body side plug wire colors dont match the ETM... i'm willing to be its a build date (11/88) issue... will work on it.

Yep - just took me a little time to check both sources... match them up.. and realize I was looking at the Euro engine!

I am mounting the diff to the 325ix oil pan, the front has been cut off with the M3 pan welded in to replace it. In order to get back oil volume I am running a euro oil cooler system from VAC (kind of expensive, but includes the cold oil bypass high pressure valve in the housing).

This is the build thread - I could post it here as well.. http://e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78938

I'm wondering which make and model used the MS40 management system of section 1210.10 in the 94 and 95 ETM. Anyone know?
