Why would you need an OBD2 cat for an M50? Obviously the motor can't tell the difference between OBDI and OBD2 cats (except OBD2 may have a downstream O2 sensor, but 1) that's not part of the cat IIRC and 2) obviously the M50 isn't OBD2), are OBD2 cats more emissions-friendly than the OBD1 cats?
    paint sucks

you're logic is wrong about the reliability question. OP is asking if the rebuilt m50 stroker would be more reliable than a used s50 motor. If everything is done properly it's probably the case, but who knows..

apparently all aftermarket cats have to be obd2 compliant now to be legal in california, so obd2 cat is needed for visual, unless you use the stock cat from the m50.

IF the engine was 95+ then it must have OBD2 cat... unless you are going to make the engine go as pre 95 and obd1. Magnaflow sells CA legal cats, even pre OBD2.

unlss the cats differed from the motors, think you mean 96 since 95 m3's were still obd1. 96 they became obd2.
