Scan tools/Code readers, what kind and is it worth it?

ordered the peake last night. rc/fx3 or something to that effect. found it for as cheap as 139/free shipping, but bought it from a shop in west chester even though i had to pay taxes to 1, get it sooner and 2, figured why not support the semi-local business.

My scan tool came in yesterday (or possibly thursday, i dont remember). Went to use it today and it wouldn't even power up when connected to the diagnostic port with the key turned to on. wwwtf. This a wiring issue, or is there a secret something I forgot to do?

Sounds like a wiring problem. The bentley has good diagrams for the data link connector.
