Starter issue resolved. New set of problems.

To make a long story short, an accidental jump between terminals of the solenoid seems to have jarred the solenoid loose and it now turns the engine over with lots of power.

It still has not fired, though :(

I realized today that my '87 had some kind of wacky fuel cooling system where the fuel is fed across the fire wall to the passenger side of the engine bay where it circulates around one of the a/c lines and then back to the fuel rail. That was very strange to try and figure out.

Now that I have bypassed that system, I am sure that I have fuel flowing through the fuel rail. I am fairly certain that my injectors are not opening, however.

I have been able to get a few short bursts of what seems to be engine firing by spraying a little starter fluid into the tb. This leads me to believe that I have spark, but pulling the coil and plug has not given me any positive visual results.

    1) How can I effectively and safely check that I'm getting spark?

    2) Is there a test to see if my injectors are opening or not? (fuel is confirmed at the rail)

    3) What are these 2 plugs? They are both coming from the drivers side of the main plastic cover on the s50 harness. (left one is not the afm)

I'm starting to question my dme, the seller claims its from a '93 325i.

    thanks

The one plug is for the O2 and the other is for the reverse light I think.

The two prong one could be the fuel evap purge valve...what color are the wires? And what exact year/model the harness is from.

Its not its connected to the Maf part of the harness. Its the reverse light the e36 one goes threw that motor harness.

aaah, I was wondering where my o2 sensor wire was.

I would like to buy (or preferably just borrow) a known working 413 red label. Let me know if you can help - I can pay shipping both ways.

I have removed my evap (charcoal) canister - so that would also make sense. harness is a '95 s50 harness.

Its not the plug for the purge valve. Dont even worry abou it. I dont have a 413 sorry I cant help you there. the plug for the purge valve is located on the MAF plug pigtal.

If its in the maf plug pigtail its the purge valve if its on the O2 pigtail its the reverse light.

to check for spark is really easy. pull out your coil and plug for cylinder #1. plug your spark plug back into the coil socket. get a medium heavy wire, strip about 2 or 3 inches of of insulation off one end and strip about 1/2" off the other. wrap the short end around the coil hold down bolt with the ground strap so you have a good ground. wrap the long end around the threads of the spark plug. presto! set the plug so you can see if it sparks from the drivers seat and crank away at your engine. if you have spark, it should be very obvious. i used this method to check for spark on my car. it was bright enough that i could easily see in bright sunlight.

for spark pull the plug and put it back in the coil, hand it to the wife and say hold the metal part. turn the key, if she jumps you got spark. i did this once, man was she pissed, but it was a good laugh.

are you sure your fuel lines are hooked up correctly? the feed goes to the front of the rail and the return goes to the regulator.

yeah, I've definitely got fuel in the rail. I disconnected the return line from the nipple under the tb (rear of the 2 nipples) and def. had gas squirting out. I do not know if my injectors are opening, however, and I suspect that they are not.

have you tried switching your fuel lines? I had a no-start issue which turned out to be swapped feed/return
