Wait a sec. I thought the 528i used the M52TU with dual vanos. What's your plan for engine management?

98 was actually the switching year, my 528i donor was actually a late production 97 though, so it wasnt the TU. So I guess, technically as far as model year is concerned, 98 1/2 was the TU.

Nice, a car minus those wheels and tires for 550 bux? I'd do it if I lived there, didnt have an engine, and had space to put a shell for a while.

Finally got ahold of the dude on the phone (previously email) selling the stuff and got his address. Officially going there tomorrow morning some time and plucking out the m50 :D Going to be raining cats and dogs, so I think we will be putting it in to his garage and rolling his drift car out into the driveway I guess.

                      M50 Update -

I have it. It's in my dad's truck right now...

Got everything except the flywheel/clutch, starter, and ac compressor. It apparently has no spark for some reason, and there are two. yeah TWO. RED label 413's with it. I'm going to test them in a friend's swap to see if they work or if they're the problem. One problem though, unrelated particularly to the swap parts, but one of the coilpacks was undone, and the spark plug removed. A couple days ago the guy had taken the front end off, fenders, nose, hood etc, and it's been raining. Water is flooding cylinder 1, but its only been a couple days so hopefully tomorrow I can tear it down a little and dry it out enough to prevent any nasty brown stuff. All the way from the airbox, to the obd1 exhaust manifolds and two ECUs for 300 bux? hell yeah. Ill find the no spark problem pretty quick I think, and replace the part, even still it's a bargain.

Actually, come to think of it. I may have an idea as to what the deal is with the no spark. Is there problems with interchangeability between NV and Vanos M50 wiring harnesses or ECU pins? I think this engine is a replacement from one that he said he siezed actually, the original, and replaced it with this one. I just remembered that when I was putting the engine in the truck, I saw the casting date on the back of the head and I'm 99% sure it said 92. So WTF over? Didn't really pay too much attention to whether it had the vanos lump or not, but I'll find out in the morning. Would that make sense if he's trying to use the 413 ecu on a NV M50 with the NV wiring harness? That is, if that's the case...... Of course then if the NV wiring harness wont fire with the 413, I think I might be boned with my buddies swap since his is a NV M50 too, or maybe it does have it. Hell, I don't know. Just thinking of all sorts of shit right now. If they both work well I can sell one and buy the proper harness if they're different somehow. Still got a boatload of obd1 parts for cheap.

Edit. Gonna open the bed of the truck and look. I cant take it any more.

Yeah, some time mid-92 (some dots around the number) cast date. Has got the bump on the front of the intake side. Beats the shit out of me. This will be a fun one............

Got the engine on a stand in my garage today and stgarfted pulling parts from it. Got the manifolds, valve cover, tb and intake, and the engine mount arms off. Most of the oil pan screws are out and ill probably try to take the last 3 or 4 out when I get back home. Since there are two red 413 ecus and they still couldn't find why there was no spark gives me hope that they are still good themselves, and something is wrong with the harness itself. I did find some evidence that might support that idea after i pulled the intake manifold and discovered a small bundle of wires, about 3 or 4, that are cut with no terminal conector. Ill be sure to post a picture of them once I get the rest of the harness freed up. I'm hoping it is something pretty simple and petty and that its the problem I'm looking for. Also, I found on the front side of the head the casting date of 11/92 so all is good as far as being an early m50.

Shit. Lost my reply on martins phone....back at it...

I also got a 90 525I radiator, its got one of those side tanks like an m42 one, is it the same thing? Can I use it? I may use it if I can, or sell it and get a nicer one. The side tank is a bit yelowed but it also has a little cooler of some sort on the back still, looks like its an oil cooler or something for ac...?

To finish this off, martin reminded me to mention thatg these people I got the engine from are total tweaks. Going back into the house every little bit for a bump comin out wiping their noses all the time, lol. Vallejo is a btotal fuckin shithole! :)
