    0bd1 m52 + e30 auto tranny

My m20 kicked the bucket today, and I'm in the middle of sourcing another m20 for it.

But just out of curiosity, I have a perfectly good m52 with obd 1 conversion lying around in my garage. Does anybody know if that will bolt up to the m20's automatic tranny?

I also have the auto tranny that originally bolted up to the m52 and the complete wiring harness for it, Im thinking it probably wouldn't be that hard to throw the entire thing into my e30, only problem is time is a big issue right now as I need this car for DD. This is my winter car so I dont want a manual transmission or anything it. I've already done an OBD 2 M52 swap (except with a manual transmission) into my summer car so I know about the wiring, motor mounts etc etc

    Thanks for input

bolting up wouldnt be an issue, just use the E30 flywheel, and E30 starter, plus it wil have the rotation like the getrag, so a custom mount would be an order.

    wiring would be the trick....

        It will bolt right up

I would assume that the zf 4hp22 would have to be tilted 10* to the side just like a getrag 260 would. That should not be an issue with the linkage, as that is easy to adjust. The cooler lines may need some adjustment/rigging. As for the wiring, I don't see what that would even matter

What MIGHT matter tho, is the fact that the ATF in the pan will not sit level with the filter/pickup. I don't know if/how that will effect the operation, and to what extent... Maybe over-filling it a quart will help?

No. Not in this case or ever.

I have a 1988 320i sedan that the m20 died in, I have since got a M52TUB25 and done the sump conversion and have a M50 intake to put on. I really want to keep this car auto since I already have a 1989 coupe.

This gearbox thing has been stressing me out on what to get for awhile since im learning as I go with the cars.

So in theory I should be able to buy another 4hp22 (im an idiot and threw mine out with the engine because I didnt know it would mate with the M52) and then just yeet it on with E30 flywheel
But I will need to get a gearbox mount made up and possibly the gearbox tilted 10 degrees?

I think the big issue is the trans tilt and trans controller. There are trans controllers for the 4hp22 (made by compushift I think) because I am not sure if the original controller can run without some electrical engine inputs. Second, mentioned earlier, is the 10 degree tilt. You may have to customize the pan and pickup for it to work right. And it may not. Why not use an auto trans that fits the doner engine?

I have a 5hp19 that fits the donar engine but im not sure what electronics i need to get in addition to make that work, also getting the gear selector to work?

Do you have the donar engine harness? The donar car should have a trans controller as well. Its just below the ECU (usually). I would start there. There are places you can go that can help you flash the rom and possibly get the ECU to ignore anything it thinks it needs to shift. Option 2, get an after market trans controller for the 5hp19. Its a common trans used in many cars, search for "5hp19 trans controller" and you can probably find someone who makes an independent trans controller. But it will shift its best with the BMW programming.
