i love how the oil cooler is exactly the same height of the space behind our kidney grill. It looks friking awesome :finger:. Hammer time!!

SoLive: for the 10secs or so that it ran, the lifters made no complaints.

...and for the record. i used no timing tools. no camshaft lock, no flywheel lock, no vanos tools, no exhaust cam sprocket turner.. nada. My camshaft "timing" tool was a block of abs plastic and an angle bar.

thanks for the help those that did.

Glad with a little (or a lot) of elbow grease you were able to get things straightened out for the better. Getting the timing right for these motors is not like a Honda (vanos [intake cam] has some breather room). When I had to replace my vanos seal I did it with nothing as well, just worked assertively and accurately. Congrats my man! Get that break in time on and get that exhaust bolted up!

The idle will suffer if not timed properly.

by cheap gauges i actually meant in the $60/e range. but they seem to be working very well...and they look hella good!!

I was a little concerned with vibrations and the pressure transducer, so i mounted it vertically. Remotely would have been smarter. We'll see what happens.. Now its kinda tricky to get the oil cap on/off with the transducer and thick (-10an) oil lines coming off it.

As for the timing, the engine starts within 1sec of cranking. Really fast, BUT i think the valve timing is not perfect. The bottom end torque is just not there. I bought the cam lock tool and flywheel pin yesterday (i'll be renting it out..[cough][cough]). We'll know by this weekend if things are corrected. I missed the reg date for this weekend's DE, but there is a drifting event that i can attend still just behind Sebring Int Raceway ; / ...anyone here should attend, its a bigass airport runway and less than 10cars are destined to show up. hundred bux anybody? we make our own track layout and you'll get so much track time your shoulders will get sore halfway through the day. pm me if you're interested.

edit: crap i bought the timing tool yesterday on ebay from: alkyracer101
UPS tracking says its sched for delivery today. i knew it would be fast transit time by buying somewhat locally, but dayuum.

You should just send them to me :) [the tools]

I have timed it wrong and timed it properly. In both times it was just the idle.

My LTW does NOT have a locking hole, so I rely being in gear and locking the driveshaft.

yup, i thought about that today. my ltw doesn't have a hole either -.-

but hey pm me if you want the tools. i won't formally put them up for rent until i finish my car... which should be by this afternoon... as soon as i get out of work i'll get down and dirty with the car.

            edit:

well.. as close as i was, valve timing was still off. Lesson learned. Now it runs well.
pic of the oil cooler.. it fits so well behind the center kidney. Its bolted on the top, right under the hood hinge bar.
            <--click me

Camshaft lock tool now for rental just pm me. I'll make it around $30 inc shipping for some ammount of time...$100deposit.

That's it folks.. i'm driving it to work tomorow morning ~32mi each way.
            No more e30s for me.

Could you please take a picture of your oil filter cap? I am interested on your oil cooling set up. BTW, how much did you pay for? How do you like it? I am thinking either have a set up like yours or change to a euro filter housing for ~$300...

for $300 you can almost set-up my entire oil cooler setup with gauges and everything.

the cap is from Ireland Engineering.

                oil cooler

look at my feedback at the "boneheadperformance" purchases. those are the fittings i used. about $120worth between hose, fittings and adapters. I used about 50% of the hose i ordered.

about 104shipped worth of mookeeh gauges. They work really good. This is one.

It works really great! I now hold about 8qts of oil, but can only change about 7qts. Because I have no thermostat on this oil coolant loop, it takes a lot longer to get the engine to temperature, and because the cooler sits behind the kidney, it takes even longer if you’re driving... specially in cold weather.

Two weeks ago I had to drive out to Sebring for a drift event in the mid30s and I couldn’t get the car’s oil to go above 150*F!!! On drifting though, I kept around 210. Mind you this is bouncing off the redline sideways in third gear. I used to see 250-260*F before. FL temperatures are coming back up so i've been able to keep around 180 on the street. I have not drifted or roadraced with the cooler yet. The gauge sensors are electric, pretty displays and seem to work great. I moved my oil viscosity down to 10w-30 to see how that helps with the oil temp and pressure.
                No more e30s for me.

you know why you were asking... should have been more explicit. i had never had an oil cooler before so live and learn... live and learn..

I just bought a 180* -10an stat. I can’t get my engine to operating temp until after 20min of city start/stop driving. Then, hen I go on the highway, it drops to back 150*C or so lol. I plan to track in GA in two weeks, there’s no way I’ll run with a cold engine so I have to spend even more money… f****! I now officially have an FDA Badass Certified e30.

                  oh... pics coming soon.

I wonder could the oil filter housing kit work with the E30 oil cooler? Have anyone try that?

No reason it wouldn't. You'd need to replace the hardlines with A/N lines from the adapter to the cooler. In stock position though that is a pretty good length to run. You'd be better suited to get a more efficient cooler, in a closer position.
