    Lucas synthetic oil addititive. Thoughts?

When I drive my 13k with rebuild s50 motor hard, I get this clicking. So I added this Lucas oil syn additive. I think it actually made a difference but I have to take it through more testing if you know what I mean. Plus, I was hoping this Lucas magic would inhibit this slight leak I have, but that may be due to such a light syn mobile 1 5w-30 oil weight. Does anyone else have experiences with the Lucas products?

why do you use 5w 30?

Thats what the previous owner of the engine said to use, and that is what the person who installed the motor said to use. What do you recommend? I am thinking of switching to 15-40 or 15-50 full syn.

Dealer recommends and uses 10w-30 regular oil, or if recently rebuilt or raced 5w-30 synthetic for any motor prior to '99. According to parts guy at dealer anyway...

          m/s50s really need 15/40 or 15/50

          after that, I'd use 5/40

I'm curious to know why it "needs" a heavier weight. Did someone prove the benefits with oil analysis or something?

BMW dealer oil is 5w-30 (although i've heard it's on the heavy end of the spectrum), but regardless we used that at the shop I used to work at and I put it in hundreds of m50, m52, s50, s52, with no ill effects. Sure if you're racing use something heavier...I've got 5w50 in mine right now, think i'll go 0-40 for winter time.
Oil level matters a lot with the ticking, are you sure you're not down a couple quarts?

Doesn't the manual call for 15/40 as the stock weight?

BMW specified that wieght untill 1995, when they switched to 5/30
