    S50 Valve Retainers

Read in the thread thats stickied at the top that pre 10/95 S50s have had valve retainers have had some problems. Have any of you guys experienced it? Did you upgrade your retainers or just let it go? With my engine coming together w/ alot of money into it would hate to have these fail

    Thanks in advance

I pulled the retainers in a 7/95 S50, and they looked fine. I replaced them with the updated pieces. I'm not sure what you've put into your engine, but if you already have the tools, replacing the top spring plates and collets costs around $150 in parts.

I'd rather not drop a valve. The best case scenario is an HG job, and R&Ring the dropped valve and seat, if the valve doesn't hit the cylinder wall by some miracle.

i bought the 'updated' ones for my motor. the motor had well over 100k on it and the 'old style' hadnt failed yet, i just did it for peace of mind just like a hundred other things on the motor.

Its 150 bucks for piece of mind. Just do them. It will be alot cheaper then dropping a valve.

Retainers fail catastrophically. So the people saying that they looked okay means nothing.

Just go ahead and replace them.

I replaced mine with the updated parts. I see no reason to NOT replace them.

Does anyone have a side by side of the two types? Easy way to identify if they are updated or not?
                    Thanks
