How do I confirm? What else could be causing a knock from the bottom end? You can hear it from under the car, around the base pan...certainly not a top end noise.

^ I was going to say, engine is a 99 to boot.

OK, so sounds like I need a second opinion. I just assumed knocking from bottom end meant bearings are toast.

What does the year have to do with it?

Thanks for the help so far.

If the noise goes away as the engine warms up, it likely is not rod knock.
Your description sounds more like cold piston slap, or gearbox.
What weight of oil are you using?
I'd take it to a BMW specialist for Dx.
